Constipation - Facts and Fallacies
Almost everyone will probably have to deal with constipation at
one point in their lives. Constipation is defined as a condition
in which a person has extreme difficulty removing wastes from the
body.
Constipation can either be chronic or acute. Acute constipation
occurs only occasionally and erratically. On the other hand, chronic
constipation occurs frequently and people afflicted with this are
advised to consult with a doctor immediately.
Normally, a person should be able to eliminate body wastes regularly
and with no difficulty or pain when doing so. People afflicted
with constipation feel extremely full and experience painful abdominal
contractions.
The most common cause of constipation has to do with the eating
habits observed by a person. A diet without adequate amounts of
water and fiber will lead to dehydration, which consequently causes
the stools to harden, thereby causing the condition known as constipation.
Constipation – Separating Truths from Myths
There is such a thing as information overload and there is a lot
of information on constipation that people can sometimes be overwhelmed
by it. Some may be true and unfortunately some may be false. Here
are some of the most common constipation facts and fictions exposed.
FICTION: Only people with poor eating habits
become constipated.
Even people who strictly observe a high fiber and high in water
diet can become constipated IF…
- they don't exercise regularly.
- a woman is pregnant or if in the menopausal stage.
- one has just graduated from intense medication due to a disease.
- a person is in his/her latter years.
FACT: Hormonal changes in the body can cause
constipation.
This is true especially for people in their senior years and women
who are pregnant and menopausal women. As hormones go haywire or
quiet down during these stages, so does bowel movement.
FICTION: Anyone who is constipated develops
hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids are caused by strain in the intestines or in the anus.
Internal hemorrhoids occur in the intestines and external hemorrhoids
occur in the anus. In both cases, sometimes bleeding and discomfort
may occur. Even if you are constipated, if you don't strain your
intestines and anus by trying hard to defecate, chances are you
won't develop hemorrhoids.
FACT: Stress and travel can cause constipation.
This is particularly true for those people who travel habitually.
The stress and routine changes that traveling brings upsets some
people's body clock, including the particular time people are used
to relieving themselves.
In all cases of constipation; every person's case is unique.
A person's diet can be high in fiber and water intake and exercise
regularly but the person can still develop constipation. Stress
and changes in routine can even trigger constipation. Treatments
that work for other people ma y not work for some. A balanc ed
diet is enough for some but not for people with chronic constipation.
Constipated people should learn and become
experts themselves. Regular
(every quarter) cleansing of their colon is extremely beneficial. Using
all natural products and staying as close to nature as possible
leads to the greatest results.
