The link between constipation and probiotics cannot be clearly defined without first explaining what probiotics are. What exactly are probiotics? Probiotics are live microorganisms that are natural residents of the digestive system. Common probiotics are the Bifidobacterium animalis and the Lactobacillus acidophilus species and yeasts.

When ingested at a certain amount daily, they help improve the environment of the intestinal tract. Not only does probiotics help in constipation, studies have also shown that probiotics also help in the prevention and alleviation of other stomach related disorders.

Probiotics beneficially affect the intestinal environment in such a way that it stifles the growth of potentially damaging bacteria in the intestinal tract therefore greatly enhancing the immune system. It also reinforces and enhances the defensive barrier of the digestive tract against harmful agents. Probiotics also help in the production of vitamin K.

Among the two most common types of probiotics used to treat constipation, recent studies have confirmed that Bifidobacterium animalis is more effective than the Lactobacillus species. In a recent study, 72 adult volunteers were asked to consume fermented milk daily with Bifidobacterium animalis in it. The results were nothing short of amazing as it greatly improved bowel movement and the colonic transit time was reduced to 21% and the sigmoid transit time was reduced to 39%.

This is not to say however that the Lactobacillus species don't work. In a study where participants were asked to drink a beverage containing 65 milliliters of lactobacillus casei Shirota a day, it was reported that the participants' bowel improvements improved.
