Can You Blame Antibiotics For Yeast Infections?

If you are suffering from a yeast infection, you may be wondering just why it is your body is being so mean to you. This is especially the case if you just had to deal with some other illness not long ago, and now this has cropped up. Well, what you may not realize is there may be a connection between the illness you just got over and the yeast infection. A very common one of the yeast infection causes out there is antibiotics.

You see, when you take antibiotics for some other ailment, while those antibiotics may take care of whatever was ailing you, they are also laying the groundwork for vaginal yeast infections.

Vaginal yeast infections are caused by the overgrowth of yeast called Candida albicans in the moist areas around the vagina. It is not completely uncommon to have this kind of bacteria in the body, but usually the friendly bacteria (probiotics) in your body keep it at bay. They consume some of that yeast and keep it from getting out of control, and turning into a vaginal yeast infection.

The problem comes, however, when you take antibiotics. Instead of just killing the bad bacteria that are causing your main illness, these antibiotics also kill off the friendly bacteria that should be fighting off the yeast and keeping it from getting out of control. This allows those Candida albicans to grow and multiply. Soon you will notice yeast infection symptoms like a white discharge and an itching sensation in the vagina.

What can you do? There are plenty of topical treatments for yeast infection symptoms at the store. The majority of these are creams that can be put on the irritated area of the vagina and will help to relieve the itching and may start to battle the yeast to get rid of the discharge and other yeast infection symptoms.

You can also adjust your diet to be a less friendly place for Candida infections to form. By adding yogurt to your diet you can help your body increase the number of good bacteria (probiotics) in your system, which will battle those bad yeast cells as they try to get out of hand.
